Effects of summer on our skin

How the summer affects your cosmetic surgery treatment

Deciding when to get cosmetic surgery can in itself be a challenging thing, however, the weather can also have an effect on the outcome of your procedure. “This is something that cannot be overstated, insofar that knowing what time of the year to get your surgery done could drastically impact the outcome of the surgery” .

As you may have guessed, the summer season being the hottest of the year is a decidedly notorious period and as such, you’ll want to know how best to approach your procedure, should you choose to do it at this time.

Here are four of the best procedures you can opt for in the summer, as well as three procedures which you should be extra cautious about during the hot season.

4 Procedures to opt for in the summer

  1. Dermal Fillers: This procedure is very much akin to Botox Injections, and there is no evidence to show that its outcome is affected by hot sun rays. This makes it a good option to take on during summer, which should restore lost skin volume.

  2. Botox Injections: Unlike laser procedures or chemical peels, Botox injections do not leave your skin more sensitive to the sun. “While sunscreen should always be a part of your regular routine, Botox does not make your skin more vulnerable to sun damage in the immediate post-treatment period,” Mr Bonello of Persona Med-Aesthetic Centre explains.

  3. Hyperhidrosis Treatments: Excessive sweating is a major concern for some people, especially during the summer months. This can be easily done away with an iontophoresis treatment, and can bring comfort and relief in the summertime.

  4. Coolsculpting: This procedure aims to rid the body of fat cells and is non-surgical. Giving the patient a more slender looking aesthetic, coolsculpting rids the body of fat cells that are resistant to diet and exercise. As such, the procedure is conducive for the summer months and sunbathing is definitely on the table.

3 Procedures which should be approached with caution during summer

  1. Aggressive Chemical Peels: As the name suggests, this form of procedure involves peeling away portions of the skin and therefore leaves the skin in a vulnerable state post-surgery. Your results will be improved by keeping away from the summer months, and choosing to opt for a different time of year.

  2. Laser Procedures: Generally laser procedures involve reversing the effect of sun damage from regular exposure to solar heat. The downside during summer is that this procedure leaves the affected area exposed, which can be damaged/affected by excessive sunlight in the summertime

  3. Sclerotherapy: Sclerotherapy is a fairly complex procedure which involves the removal of spider veins. The treatment requires patients to wear thick compression stockings which will be needed post-surgery. These stockings can cause serious discomfort from heat and itching, and thus, summer may not be the best time to undergo the treatment.
