Onlya few days ago we were on a roll, changing our facebook statuses to "It's finally out! Our calendar in aid of Dar Merhba Bik is out and YOU can all help!" That was at the Malta Girl Guides National Conference 2014, the same day the 'Reflection of a woman' calendar was officially launched. In their quest to continue addressing issues affecting young girls and women, Malta Girl Guides (MGG) have been and are supporting the production of this calendar, but I will first walk you through what happened last Saturday at Le Meridien, St Julian's ;)
Those of us present at MGG National Conference had the pleasure to hear Her Excellency, President Marie Louise Coleiro Preca share her experience with groups of children at schools whose ages range from as little as 7 years of age to 14/15 year olds. Dr Coleiro Preca explained how she was shocked and surprised when even the youngest of pupils were deeply concerned with prejudice and were still experiencing bullying for wearing glasses, being fat, coming from families with a number of social issues. Fear of immigrants or anyone foreigner for that matter is very common and immediately noticeable when speaking to these students. What makes it worse is the fact that these youngsters are afraid to speak out and share these issues and concerns, and would rather opt to for other solutions such introversion or self-harm to deal with the pain. Dr Coleiro Preca highlighted how as an organisation the Malta Girl Guides has always embraced and worked with such challenges, whilst promoting inclusion and solidarity. She also emphasized how Malta needs this organisation to continue bloom and blossom in our society.
Following the President's discourse, it was time to officially launch our beloved calendar; a tribute to women's independence, strong will and class. The 14-month calendar portrays women as strong but beautiful individuals, illustrating their different traits: loving, independent, maternal and caring all at once. The photos are accompanied by strong testimonials from the women residing at Dar Merhba Bik who would have suffered from physical, emotional, financial and/or sexual abuses. The Good Sheperd Sisters and volunteers who run Dar Merhba Bik strive to reach one goal; helping women and their children to see obstacles as opportunities and be successful in society.
The calendar retails at Eur5.00 and is available from My Melts – Mosta, Handmade Concepts – Mosta, Cauci's Mosta Brema Supermarket – Mosta, Razzle Dazzle – Naxxar, Yume – Attard, The Tink Shop –Attard, Beauty Rituals – Msida, College Corner Stationary – Msida, Best N Less - Qormi and Fgura, Head Rush – Sliema, Nails by Marilyn Montebello – Birzebbuga.
